Dental Care

Nearly everyone understands how important proper dental care is for people, but did you know that it is equally important for our pets as well? In fact, experts agree that veterinary dental care for pets can increase their lifespan by as much as 25%, and that’s a lot of time to love on your pet companion! At Town and Country Veterinary Clinic in Lafayette, Dr. Pete Van Duzee has many years of successfully providing care for the dental needs of the pets in the area, and he looks forward to caring for your furry family member as well.

What causes dental disease in my pet?

Without proper dental care, periodontal issues begin in pets in much the same as people. Food particles and bacteria collect in the teeth and gumline; over time these bacteria start to form a film known as plaque, which will ultimately harden and become tartar. Without treatment, these hardened germs will begin to damage the gums and cause tooth decay. The bacteria then gets into blood stream through inflammation in gums which then travel to heart, kidney, and liver, and this can shorten the lifespan of your pet.

How can I tell if my pet has dental issues?

The most important thing you can do to protect your precious pet from dental disease is to have regular checkups and cleanings from a veterinarian. If you were not aware of these issues, or recently adopted a pet, there are signs that may indicate they are suffering from periodontal disease:

  • Bad breath
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Discolored teeth
  • Bloody residue in the saliva
  • Loss of appetite or weight
  • Your pet will not allow you to touch them in the muzzle area

We also have dental radiographs to properly access disease that is occurring under gum line that is not visible by naked eye. Help your pet have a longer, healthier life by scheduling a dental evaluation at Town and Country Veterinary Clinic, call one of our caring professionals today!
